On Tuesday there was a large party at Longbourn and the two gentlemen who were most anxiously expected came early. when they went to the dining room Elizabeth eagerly watched to see whether Bingley would take the place beside her sister. on entering the room he seemed to hesitate; but Jane happened to look round and happened to smile. It was decided.he sat beside her.
Elizabeth looked towards his friend. he bore it with noble indifference Elizabeth would have imagined that Bingley had recieved his permission to be happy; if she had not also seen his eyes turn towards Mr.Darcy with half-laughing alarm.
Bingley’s behaviour towards Jane persuaded that, if he was left to himself, Jane’s happiness and his own would be sure. Mr.Darcy was almost as far from her as possible, sitting beside her mother. she knew how little pleasure this would give either of them. she could see how seldom they spoke to each other and how formal and cold they were. her mother’s manner made the knowledge of what they owed him more painful to Elizabeth. she longed to be able to tell him that his kindness was known by some of the family.
she hoped that during the evening they would be brought together. anxious and uneasy, the time passed in the drawing room before the gentlement joined them. the gentlement came and Darcy looked as if he would answer her hopes. but, alas, the ladies had crowded round the table where Elizabeth was pouring coffee and there was no space for a chair near her.
Darcy had walked away to another part of room. she followed him with her eyes, envied everyone to whom he spoke, was hardly patient enough to pour the coffee.then she was angry with herself for being so silly!.
((A man who has once been refused! how could i ever expect a renewal of his love?)).
She was a little encouraged, however, when he brought back his coffee cup himself. She seized the opportunity to say,((Is your sister at pemberley still?)).
((yes, she will remain there until Christmas)).
((Quite alone? have all her friends left her?)).
((Mrs. Annesley is with her. the others have gone to Scarborough)).
She could think of nothing more to say; but if he wished to talk with her he could say something himself. he stood by her, however, for some minutes in silence; and at last walked away.
When the card tables were placed she again hoped to be joined by him, but they were kept the whole evening at separate tables. her only hope was that his eyes were so often turned towards her that he played as unsuccessfuly as herself.
Mrs. Bennet was in great spirits after the party. She had seen enough of Bingley’s behaviour to jane to be sure that she would get him at last.
Jane was happy too.((It has been a very agreeable day)), she said to Elizabeth.
((Everyone at the party seemed to get on so well together.I hope we may often meet again)).
Elizabeth smiled.
((Lizzy, you must not smile like that.it embarrasses me. I have now learned to enjoy his conversation as an agreeable and sensible young man, without having a wish beyond it. I am quite sure that he never intended to gain my affection. It is only that he is blessed with greater sweetness of manners than any other man)).
((You are very cruel)), said her sister.
((you will not let me smile, and are forcing me to it every moment))
((How hard it is in some cases to be believed)).
((and how impossible in others)).
